Circle Hooks: Your friend on a 5-day
As I mentioned in my last blog entry, I do not use less than 130-pound test unless we are on a 5 or 8-day trip. On these shorter trips we use lighter line, and we use circle hooks. These hooks allow you to use lighter line and still land your fish. They are perfect for when a school of 80-100-pound Bluefin surround the boat, and they’re a little line-shy and you need to use 50 pound test. By using a circle hook, if you get lucky and hook your fish in the corner of the mouth, your chances of landing the fish go way up. We have caught a lot of fish in the 60-80-pound class using 50-pound test and circle hooks. The hooks prevent the fish from chewing you off because you’ve got it hooked in the corner of the mouth.
